CBSE webinar on assessment and evaluation

The Board of Directors, Indian Schools Oman in association with the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), New Delhi conducted a webinar on ‘Assessments and Evaluation – Tracking Students’ Progress during the Pandemic’ on Sunday, 13th September 2020.

The resource persons for the virtual event were guest experts from CBSE, Dr. Joseph Emmanuel, Director (Academics) and Dr. Sanyam Bhardwaj, Controller of Examinations. Various Principals, Vice Principals, Assistant Vice Principals and teachers of Indian Schools in Oman attended the insightful and interactive session.

The event began with a welcome address by Mr. Vinoba M.P., Senior Principal and Education Advisor to the Board of Directors of Indian Schools, who welcomed the CBSE dignitaries and spoke about the phenomenal measures taken by the Board in upskilling the staff and providing quality remote learning to students during the pandemic period.

In his inaugural message, Dr. Baby Sam Saamuel, Chairman of the Indian School Board thanked CBSE for the support extended to Indian Schools in Oman, especially during Covid-19, through various online sessions for the upskilling of faculty. “This webinar session will no doubt lead us on the way ahead, as we now climb up the ladder in our Covid-response”, Dr. Sam added. He also lauded the resilience and adaptability shown by teachers across Indian Schools in Oman in mastering the skills required to initiate remote learning and said that it has been a constant and continual journey of learning for the staff and students.

The CBSE Officials, Dr. Joseph Emmanuel, Director (Academics) and Dr. Sanyam Bhardwaj, Controller of Examinations were introduced to the forum by Mrs. Papri Ghosh, Principal, Indian School Al Ghubra and Dr. Rajeev Kumar Chauhan, Principal, Indian School Muscat respectively.

Dr. Joseph Emmanuel, Director (Academics) – CBSE, in his address, highlighted the salient aspects of the New Education Policy and the positive impact it will have on the educational front in the country. “It will be a transition from content-based learning to competency-based learning and preparing the young generation to take up the challenges of the 21st century without losing the elements of discipline, commitment and hard work that are quintessential of the Indian Education system.” Dr. Emmanuel said.

In his address to the forum, Dr. Sanyam Bhardwaj, Controller of Examinations – CBSE, covered the whole gamut of Assessments and Evaluations with specific reference to the ways and means of tracking students’ progress during the prevailing pandemic milieu. Dr. Bhardwaj said that the CBSE Board, India was able to conduct the public examinations and declare the results even during the pandemic period and he thanked the Heads of all CBSE affiliated schools across the world for the support received from them in this regard.

In a Q & A session held as part of the webinar, the CBSE Officials responded to the queries posed to them by the Principals and the teachers. The Q&A session was moderated by Mrs. Sanchitha Verma, Convener of Oman Chapter of CBSE Principals.

The webinar was moderated by Mr. Alex C. Joseph, Assistant Education Advisor and was concluded with a vote of thanks proposed by Mr. S.I. Shareef, Principal, Indian School Muladha.

Academic Manual Release

The Board of Directors, Indian Schools Oman has released an Academic Manual for all Indian Schools in Oman, during its meeting held on 7th September 2020.

The Academic Manual has been drafted by a specially-created team comprising of eminent senior teachers from different Indian Schools, with inputs from the Principals of Indian Schools as well as Academic Advisory Committee that included academicians and experts from various sectors and organisations in Oman. The manual aims to be common framework that offers guidance to all Indian Schools in Oman on matters pertaining to the academic administrative works of the schools.

“The Academic Manual, developed under the aegis of the Board of Directors, is the fruit of the labor of a committee of academicians – subject experts from within and outside of our schooling system. This manual will be a guiding light for our schools and will facilitate in streamlining of our processes as we strive to pursue a modern curriculum and offer holistic education,” said Dr. Baby Sam Saamuel, Chairman, Board of Directors of Indian Schools Oman.

Mr. Gajesh Dhariwal, Director of the Indian School Board, performed the ceremonial launch and presented the first copy of the Manual to Mr. Vinoba M.P., Senior Principal and Education Advisor to the Board of Directors.

The Manual is founded on the concept of holistic education which underscores the necessity of all-round development of a child – academic, physical, emotional, spiritual and psychological. This is in line with the continued pursuit and vision of the Board in bringing about transformative learning where every child is equipped with the knowledge, skills and well-being to find their identity and purpose in life.

CAN-CER-VIVE AMIDST COVID

The Board of Directors, Indian Schools Oman, in association with Embassy of India and Oman Cancer Association, organized a cancer awareness webinar, ‘Can-cer-vive amidst Covid’ on 6th September 2020.

The event was a special educational session for teachers and staff of Indian Schools in Oman and was held to commemorate the Teacher’s Day, falling annually on 5th September. The main objective of this program was to create awareness among the participants on the need to continue to be vigilant against cancer, even during the pandemic.

Dr. Baby Sam Saamuel, Chairman, Board of Directors, Indian Schools Oman inaugurated the webinar. He emphasized the role and relevance of teachers during the pandemic and said that it was a matter of pride that teachers from Indian Schools in Oman were one of the first in the region to implement remote learning in a short span of time. Dr. Saamuel congratulated Mr. Eskalin Gonsalves and Mr. Venketeson Karthikeyan, recipients of CBSE Teacher Award 2019, the only two teachers outside India to win this prestigious award this year. He thanked the Embassy of India and Oman Cancer Association for facilitating the insightful session on cancer awareness for the staff of Indian Schools.

Following this, Her Excellency Madam Yuther Al Rawahy, Founder and Life President of Oman Cancer Association and a cancer survivor herself, shared her life testimony with the audience while Dr. Wahid Al Kharusi, Chairman, Oman Cancer Association spoke about the initiatives of the Oman Cancer Association in fighting against cancer.

Dr. Rajyashree Kutty, Specialist Surgeon, Barakath Alnoor Clinic Muscat was the Expert Speaker for the event. She conducted a detailed presentation which enlightened the audience on the different types of cancer and the precautions to be taken for its early detection and prevention. The Q&A that followed clarified the queries posed by teachers and made the session interactive.

The event was felicitated by Mr. Rakesh Adlekha, Deputy Chief of Mission, Indian Embassy, Muscat. More than 2000 participants attended the entire program which was streamed live on YouTube.

INDIAN SCHOOLS AWAIT VIRTUAL ISQUIZ 2020

Exciting and thrilling times are awaiting the talented students of the 21 Indian schools in Oman, as Indian School Salalah is organizing the 2nd Edition of the mega inter-school quiz competition (ISQUIZ) under the aegis of the Board of Directors, Indian Schools Oman.

More than 5000 students from the 21 Indian Schools will vie for the top honors in this highly reputed Quiz Competition. This popular event which is going to be conducted online will definitely provide a platform to the quiz wizards of Indian Schools in the days to come.

ISQUIZ 2020 consists of three categories: Senior (Classes IX to XII), Junior (Classes V to VIII), and Sub Junior (Classes I to IV). The four stages of the Quiz Competition, viz. the two qualifying rounds followed by the mega prelim and then the Grand Finale will be conducted online. Registration for the event commences on 23rd August 2020 and closes on 10th September 2020. There is no entry fee for the participants.

The grand finale of the Mega Quiz will be held on 10th October 2020 and hosted by the celebrity Quiz Master, Mr. Vinay Mudaliar of Mindcogs, a prominent Quiz venture. The Mega Preliminary and the Grand Finale will be aired on Zoom and the live broadcast made available on YouTube for the public.

The weekly quiz that will appear on the ISQUIZ 2020 space of the Muscat Daily will fascinate the inquisitive minds; attractive prizes await the lucky winners of each week and the prizes will be given away on the day of the grand finale. If there are more people with all the answers correct, the lucky one among them will be decided by drawing lots. The weekly competition on Muscat Daily is open to all residents of Oman, students as well as adults and it will commence from the first week of September 2020 for five consecutive weeks.

“Amidst the challenging situation of the prevailing Pandemic, this online ISQUIZ 2020 different from the usual live quiz, will surely be an exciting and interesting battle of the brains.
